Bushfires are a constant threat in Australia, and the Great Ocean Road along Victoria's south-west coast is particularly vulnerable. The towns in this region are surrounded by dry, dense vegetation and rapid urbanization, made even more precarious by the fact that there is only one road in and one road out. The communities and natural environment in this area have endured significant damages from bushfires in the past. With the northern hemisphere experiencing one of its most severe wildfire seasons and an El Niño event underway in Australia, concerns about the upcoming fire season are mounting. Our group sought to explore these concerns, interviewing local business owners, community members, and the Country Fire Authority to hear their experiences and expectations for summer of 2024.

The concept and motivation behind this project stem from my own life experiences. Having moved frequently, both domestically and internationally, l've always been drawn to destinations with rich natural surroundings. In creating my road trip documentary series, l've realized I'm not alone in this connection to nature. After conducting a survey with travelers who have visited multiple countries, I found that the majority of respondents shared a strong desire to hike to waterfalls, rent campervans in remote areas without cell service, snorkel off island beaches, and visit places free from tourists. This short video captures the emotions of feeling confined by city life and routine, while yearning for the freedom of nature and the thrill of the next adventure.
